The French government is set to review its visa issuance policy due to increasing migration pressure. According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, an audit of the visa system will be conducted to assess its efficiency, Schengen.News reports.
Authorities have described France’s current system as one of the largest and most generous in the European Union. In 2024, France issued around 2.8 million visas, making it a leader among Schengen countries in terms of visa approvals. However, due to the evolving migration landscape, the government believes a thorough review is necessary.
France Leads in Schengen Visa Issuance
France consistently ranks as the leading country in issuing Schengen visas. According to SchengenVisaInfo, in 2023 alone, France received 2,625,846 visa applications and granted 2,169,332 visas to foreign nationals.
The highest number of visas were issued to citizens of China (271,111 visas), Morocco (310,057 visas), and Algeria (279,005 visas).
Following the visa policy audit, the government is expected to implement new regulations to refine the visa process and adjust its migration framework.
France to Strengthen Border Controls to Curb Irregular Migration
In addition to the visa policy review, France will also tighten border controls. A new border force unit will be deployed to enhance security, a measure that has already been tested at the Italian border and will now be extended to other entry points.
According to Telquel, these measures will be reinforced by the incorporation of the EU Migration and Asylum Pact into French law, which is expected to come into effect in 2025.
Furthermore, France is considering revising its migration cooperation agreements with the UK to address increasing migration challenges.
French Prime Minister François Bayrou emphasized that France’s current reception capacity is not aligned with the growing migration dynamics:
“The goal is to bring our immigration system in line with the country’s actual integration capacity.”
In 2024 alone, France welcomed over 500,000 immigrants, prompting the government to take urgent action to ensure sustainable migration policies.
