Poland Backs Borders: Two-Thirds of Citizens Support EU Border Controls

A recent survey conducted by SW Research for Rzeczpospolita revealed that 62% of Poles support reinstating border controls within the European Union to curb illegal migration. 23% of respondents opposed this measure, while 15% were undecided.
These findings reflect growing concerns within Polish society regarding security and migration policies. Poland has already faced significant migration pressure on its borders with Ukraine and Belarus and is demanding an exemption from the agreement.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that the country will not comply with the EU migration pact if it requires accepting migrants registered in other EU countries. He emphasized that Polish security forces risk their lives daily to stem the flow of illegal migrants, especially from Belarus.
This situation highlights the tension between national interests and pan-European commitments. Poland, like other EU countries, faces a dilemma: how to balance ensuring national security with fulfilling obligations to its allies.
Amid the ongoing migration crisis and disagreements over the distribution of responsibility among EU member states, the issue of reinstating internal borders is becoming increasingly pertinent. However, such a move could jeopardize the principles of free movement that underpin the Schengen Agreement.
Thus, Poland finds itself at a crossroads: on one hand, the desire to protect its borders and citizens; on the other, the need to adhere to European agreements and maintain solidarity within the EU. Resolving this dilemma will require careful consideration of all factors and possibly a reassessment of existing approaches to migration policy.
