New EU Entry Rules from 2025: What Are EES and ETIAS and How They Will Affect Tourists

New EU Entry Rules from 2025: What Are EES and ETIAS and How They Will Affect Tourists

Starting in 2025, travelers heading to the Schengen Area will face new entry procedures. The European Union is introducing two major systems: EES (Entry/Exit System) and ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System). These systems aim to improve border security, automate checks, and reduce illegal overstays.

What is EES?

EES is an automated IT system that replaces passport stamps. It records:
- Date and place of entry/exit;
- Length of authorized stay;
- Biometric dаta: fingerprints and facial image.

The system helps identify overstayers and improves border management across the EU.

What is ETIAS?

ETIAS is an electronic travel authorization system. Citizens of over 60 visa-exempt countries will need to apply for permission online before entering the EU.

Cost: €7.

Valid for 3 years.

Online process takes minutes.

Required even for transit.

Who Will Be Affected?

ETIAS and EES apply to nationals of countries such as the US, Canada, UK, Japan, Ukraine, Israel, Georgia, and others who currently enjoy visa-free access.

What Will Change at the Border?

No more stamps — entry/exit data will be recorded digitally.

Biometric checks will be done at the first entry.

Border agents will have faster and more accurate information.

When Will It Start?

EES is expected to launch in Q4 2024.

ETIAS will be implemented in mid-2025, pending system readiness.

Stay informed and plan your trip accordingly to avoid surprises at the border.
