Austria Processed Only 2% of Schengen Visa Applications in 2024, Yet Earned Over €22 Million

Austria accounted for just 2.24% of all Schengen visa applications filed in 2024, handling 262,017 requests — yet generated over €22.2 million from visa fees. According to SchengenVisaInfo, Austria ranked 8th in terms of total applications received among Schengen states.
86% approval rate — but rejections concentrated in specific nationalities
Austria approved 224,747 applications (86%), while 35,817 applications (14%) were rejected.
Countries with the highest rejection rates:
Pakistan — 83.55%
Syria — 50.84%
Senegal — 50.65%
Ethiopia — 41.8%
Morocco — 41.17%
Meanwhile, several countries enjoyed almost universal acceptance.
Top sources of applications: China and India dominate
Five countries accounted for 60% of all visa requests filed with Austrian consulates:
China — 51,761 applications (19.8%)
India — 43,504 (16.6%)
Saudi Arabia — 24,782 (9.4%)
Türkiye — 23,171 (8.8%)
Thailand — 14,423 (5.5%)
These figures underline Austria’s strong visa ties with Asia and the Middle East.
Best approval rates: Taiwan, Indonesia and Australia
Visa issuance was nearly guaranteed for some nationalities:
Taiwan — 100% (174 visas)
Indonesia — 99.02% (4,126 of 4,167)
Thailand — 98.29% (14,177)
Australia — 98.27% (4,603)
Ireland — 99.51% (1,215)
Visa fees brought Austria €22.2 million
With the average Schengen visa fee rising from €80 to €90 in mid-2024, Austria collected approximately:
€22.2 million total
€3 million from rejected applications alone
Despite its smaller share of applications, Austria remains a significant revenue generator in the Schengen visa system.
