Egypt and Bosnia Deepen Tourism Ties

Egypt and Bosnia and Herzegovina plan to implement their tourism cooperation agreement more actively, improve air links and promote their destinations at international events. The ministerial meeting held on July 26, 2026, did not, however, produce a new flight announcement, visa waiver or disclosed investment contract.

Ministers Discuss Tourism at the Grand Egyptian Museum

Egyptian Tourism and Antiquities Minister Sherif Fathy met Staša Košarac, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Deputy Chair of the Council of Ministers and Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations, at the Grand Egyptian Museum near the Giza Pyramids.

The talks covered destination promotion, professional training, two-way visitor flows and air services. The ministers also discussed Expo 2027 in Belgrade as a venue for meetings between tour operators, airlines, hotel companies and investors. The Bosnian delegation later toured the museum and the pyramids, Egypt Independent reported, citing MENA.

The published statement disclosed no project values, implementation deadlines, hotel investments or airline commitments. The meeting therefore established priorities rather than a measurable commercial outcome.

The Memorandum Dates Back to August 2025

Fathy and Košarac signed the tourism memorandum in Sarajevo in August 2025. It provides for professional exchanges, support for tourism infrastructure investment and the creation of a joint working group.

Most tourism powers in Bosnia and Herzegovina belong to the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Republika Srpska. Košarac’s state-level ministry mainly performs a coordinating role, meaning nationwide projects require cooperation among several authorities, N1 Sarajevo reported.

In January 2026, Bosnian Foreign Minister Elmedin Konaković and Fathy again discussed implementation of the memorandum, cultural programmes and closer links between tourism businesses, according to the Bosnian Foreign Ministry.

Charter Flights Operated, but No Permanent Route Exists

The first nonstop Cairo–Sarajevo charter arrived on August 13, 2025. Petroleum Air Services operated it with Tishoury Tours and MTS. Sarajevo airport initially listed three August departures and reported plans for two weekly charters from May to October 2026. The latter was an operator proposal rather than a confirmed permanent timetable, the airport statement shows.

Direct services were not limited to those first flights. Travel King marketed weekly Sarajevo–Cairo package departures every Friday from October 10, 2025, through March 28, 2026, using Air Cairo flight SM3216, according to the operator’s programme.

Published schedules showed no permanent nonstop Cairo–Sarajevo service on July 24–25, 2026. Available journeys required connections through Istanbul, Vienna, Rome, Warsaw or other hubs, according to FlightConnections.

The two countries therefore have experience with seasonal charters, but the latest talks should not be presented as the launch of a regular route.

Visa Rules Still Limit Travel

Ordinary and biometric Bosnian passport holders require visas for Egypt. Egyptian ordinary-passport holders also generally require visas for Bosnia and Herzegovina. Egyptian diplomatic, official and special passport holders may enter visa-free for up to 90 days, the Bosnian Foreign Ministry states.

Certain Egyptian travellers may enter without a separate Bosnian visa if they hold a qualifying multiple-entry visa or residence permit issued by a Schengen country, an EU member state or the United States. Duration and entry conditions remain subject to the validity of those documents and border checks, according to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Foreign Investment Promotion Agency.

No agreement abolishing visas for ordinary passport holders had been announced by late July 2026.

Tourism Statistics Require Methodological Caution

Egypt received about 19 million tourists in 2025, a 20.5% increase from 2024. Arrivals rose another 7% in January–April 2026, from 5.7 million to 6.1 million, the Egyptian State Information Service reported.

Tourism revenue increased 16.3% to $16.7 billion in the 2024/25 financial year. Tourist nights reached 179.3 million, compared with 154.1 million in the preceding year, according to the Central Bank figures published in the country’s balance-of-payments report.

A separate claim that tourism revenue increased 56.1% is inconsistent with the reported rise from $14.4 billion to $16.7 billion. Those values and the Central Bank release produce a year-on-year increase of 16.3%.

Bosnia and Herzegovina recorded 1,963,443 arrivals at commercial accommodation establishments in 2025, up 0.3% from the revised 2024 total. Overnight stays increased 1% to 4,083,977, with international guests accounting for 70.3%.

Earlier releases placed the 2024 total at 1,935,745 arrivals. The final comparison base was subsequently revised to 1,957,261, explaining the official 0.3% growth rate for 2025. The figures and methodology appear in the national statistics agency’s final release.

Egypt’s 19 million arrivals and Bosnia and Herzegovina’s 1.96 million accommodation registrations are not directly comparable. Bosnia counts check-ins at commercial accommodation properties, meaning a traveller may be recorded more than once when staying at several establishments.

Bilateral Visitor Numbers Remain Small

Bosnian accommodation establishments registered 1,318 arrivals from Egypt and 4,680 overnight stays during 2025. Their average stay was 3.6 nights.

During January–May 2026, Egyptian registrations increased 94.5%, from 220 to 428. Overnight stays rose 68.5%, from 904 to 1,523. Egypt nevertheless accounted for only 0.2% of all foreign visitor nights.

Bosnia and Herzegovina recorded 669,202 total accommodation arrivals during the first five months of 2026, up 1.1%. Foreign arrivals increased by only 0.3%, while international overnight stays rose 3%, according to the official cumulative release.

The Egyptian segment is growing rapidly in percentage terms, but from an exceptionally low base. It remains too small to affect Bosnia and Herzegovina’s overall tourism performance materially.

Expo 2027 Will Provide a Business Venue

Specialised Expo 2027 will be held in Belgrade from May 15 to August 15, 2027, under the theme “Play for Humanity: Sport and Music for All.” Organisers expect more than 4 million visits, while more than 130 countries had confirmed participation by May 2026, the Serbian government said.

Egypt and Bosnia and Herzegovina intend to use the event for destination promotion and meetings between tourism businesses. Participation alone will not generate visitor growth. Commercial results will depend on recurring flights, competitively priced packages, simpler entry procedures and enforceable agreements between operators.

As International Investment experts note, the talks support diplomatic and business contacts, but it is premature to describe the relationship as a major tourism corridor. Bosnia and Herzegovina recorded only 428 Egyptian arrivals in the first five months of 2026, there is no permanent nonstop route, and ordinary passport holders generally remain subject to visas. The memorandum will gain economic significance only when it produces sustainable flight programmes and measurable agreements among airlines, tour operators and hotel companies.
