Germany Sets Citizenship Record: 291,955 Naturalisations in 2024


Syrians, Russians, and Turks Lead the Surge in Applications

In a record-breaking year, 291,955 people became German citizens in 2024, an increase of 46% compared to 2023. This marks the highest naturalisation count since records began in 2000, according to Destatis.

Top Countries of Origin


Syria: 83,150 (28% of total)

Turkey: 22,525 (+110%)

Iraq: 13,545

Russia: 12,980 (+551%)

Afghanistan: 10,085

The number of naturalisations among former or dual Russian citizens increased sixfold compared to 2023 (from 1,995 to 12,980). Syrians continue to dominate, with 9% of Syrian residents acquiring German citizenship in one year.

Integration & Family-Based Applications


86% of all naturalisations were part of co-naturalisation of spouses and children.

7% were awarded based on special integration achievements.

The average residency duration before naturalisation was 11.8 years, and 7.4 years for Syrians.

22% of stateless persons residing in Germany (4,130 people) also gained citizenship.
