Growing demand fuels fraud

Thailand Warns of Rising Visa Scams

As outbound travel from Thailand accelerates, visa-related scams are becoming increasingly common. VFS Global has issued a warning about illegitimate websites and intermediaries misleading applicants with false promises of fast-track visa processing or guaranteed appointment slots.

How the scams operate

According to Simon Peachey, regional head at VFS Global, fraudsters exploit heightened demand by sending fake appointment confirmations or requesting additional payments for priority access. The company stresses that it does not sell visa appointments and does not offer paid expedited services.

VFS Global’s official stance

VFS Global reiterates that all visa appointments are free and must be booked only through its official website or relevant government portals. The company has also introduced direct reporting tools and actively works to identify and shut down impersonating websites.

A global pattern emerges

Similar scams are surfacing beyond Thailand. In Australia, travellers with dual British and Australian citizenship have been targeted following new UK entry rules. Fraudulent websites now offer to “speed up” British passport renewals at inflated prices, preying on confusion around the new regulations.

Why scams surge during regulatory change

Cybersecurity experts note that fraud spikes often coincide with new legal or administrative requirements. Well-designed fake websites promoted through paid ads or search optimisation can easily mislead travellers unfamiliar with official government domains.

Digital warning signs

Experts caution that urgency tactics, guarantees of success and requests for unconventional payment methods are common indicators of illegitimate services. Unsolicited emails offering visa assistance are also considered a major red flag.

International Investment expert insight

According to International Investment experts, the rise in visa scams highlights the unintended consequences of increasingly complex mobility rules. As travel and migration frameworks evolve, reliance on verified official channels becomes essential to mitigate financial and legal risks for travellers and internationally mobile investors.
