EU to Roll Out New Entry/Exit System: What Travelers Need to Know

EU to Roll Out New Entry/Exit System: What Travelers Need to Know

The European Union has officially announced the phased rollout of its new Entry/Exit System (EES), an automated system designed to replace manual passport stamping and enhance border security.

Following years of delays, the EU has confirmed that EES will become operational in autumn 2025. However, countries will be given a six-month transition period to fully implement the system.

How Will EES Be Implemented?
EU member states will have two options for deploying the system:
1) Immediate full implementation
2) Phased deployment over six months

Under the phased rollout:
- Month 1: 10% of border crossings must be registered in EES.
- First 60 days: No biometric data required.
- After 3 months: Biometric controls must be active at at least 50% of entry points.
- By month 6: Full EES registration is mandatory.

During the transition period, manual passport stamping will continue.

What is the Entry/Exit System (EES)?
Key Features:
- Stores biometric and personal data of all non-EU visitors.
- Replaces passport stamping with automated digital records.
- Tracks travelers’ entry and exit dates.
- Registration remains valid for three years.

Who Needs to Register?

All non-EU travelers, including those who don’t need a visa for Schengen.

Why is EES being introduced?

- To prevent illegal overstays.
- To track migration movements.
- To improve border security.

What Should Travelers Expect?
- Longer wait times at border checkpoints.
- Mandatory biometric data collection.
- Gradual transition from manual passport stamping.

Travelers are advised to check updates and allow extra time for border crossings.
