Slovakia to Tighten Business Residence Rules and Extend National Visas

Slovakia is preparing a significant overhaul of its immigration framework for entrepreneurs and freelancers, with new rules slated to take effect on July 1, 2025, according to Schengen News.

The changes introduce quotas on business residence permits, though exact figures remain pending. Authorities also plan to simplify paperwork, scrapping requirements for physical photographs and proof of financial coverage—a nod toward digitalization and closing loopholes often exploited for tax evasion.

“Slovakia is moving toward digital processing and aims to ensure that business permits are used for genuine entrepreneurial activities rather than as a tax workaround,” analysts noted.

Another major shift: initial applications will now be mandatory via Slovak consulates abroad rather than directly with immigration offices, a step that could extend processing times, especially for freelancers and startup founders.

Meanwhile, the government aims to increase national visa validity from 90 to 120 days to give foreigners more time to secure appointments under a soon-to-be mandatory reservation system. If passed by Parliament, the changes would also roll out on July 1.

Interest in Slovakia is rising as migration policies tighten elsewhere in the EU. Chinese entrepreneurs, in particular, are a focus, with plans to issue up to 1,000 national visas annually for Chinese nationals.

Businesses and investors are closely watching the reforms, as Slovak authorities hope stricter rules will reduce sham business setups while preserving the inflow of skilled professionals.
