Wizz Air Launches London Santorini Route

New direct connection between the UK and Greece

Wizz Air has announced the launch of a new direct route linking London with the Greek island of Santorini, continuing its expansion across key European leisure markets. The new service represents an important step in the airline’s growth strategy and aims to increase accessibility to one of Europe’s most iconic destinations for UK travelers.

Santorini has long been regarded as a premium holiday destination, often associated with high travel and accommodation costs. By introducing a low-cost direct connection, Wizz Air is positioning itself to capture rising demand for affordable summer travel to Greece.

Flight schedule and start date

The new route from London Gatwick to Santorini is set to begin on July 1. Flights will operate twice weekly, on Wednesdays and Sundays, aligning with peak summer travel demand. The timing allows UK holidaymakers to plan both short breaks and longer stays during the busiest travel months.

Launching the route ahead of the high season highlights Wizz Air’s focus on responding quickly to market demand and strengthening its leisure portfolio.

Opening Santorini to a wider audience

Santorini is internationally known for its whitewashed architecture, dramatic volcanic landscape and panoramic views over the Aegean Sea. For years, the island has attracted high-end travelers, honeymooners and luxury tourism, limiting its accessibility for budget-conscious visitors.

The introduction of a low-cost direct flight changes this dynamic. Wizz Air’s pricing model lowers the barrier to entry, enabling a broader range of travelers to experience the island and potentially reshaping tourism flows across the Cyclades.

Expanding Wizz Air’s Greek network

The Santorini route is part of a broader expansion of Wizz Air’s operations in Greece. During the summer season, the airline is adding or increasing services to destinations including Crete, Corfu, Mykonos, Rhodes and Zakynthos. This positions Wizz Air as one of the leading carriers connecting the UK with Greek island destinations.

Greece remains one of the most popular holiday choices for British travelers, combining cultural heritage, favorable climate and strong tourism infrastructure. Expanded air connectivity further supports this demand.

Growth strategy and sustainability focus

Wizz Air now operates more than 110 routes from the UK, linking British airports with nearly 80 destinations across Europe and beyond. Fleet expansion and the introduction of more fuel-efficient aircraft remain central to the airline’s strategy, supporting both cost control and environmental goals.

The focus on direct, affordable routes to high-demand leisure destinations reflects a broader shift in European travel toward accessible and price-sensitive tourism.

As experts at International Investment report, the new London–Santorini route illustrates how low-cost carriers are transforming traditionally premium destinations into mass-market travel options. They note that increased competition on Greek island routes is likely to stimulate demand while exerting downward pressure on fares and reshaping regional tourism economics.
