Greece Tourism Reaches 156 Million Nights
Greece’s tourism sector continues to expand
Greece’s tourism industry recorded strong performance in 2025, reaffirming its position as one of Europe’s most important travel destinations. According to the latest European tourism statistics, the total number of overnight stays in hotels, resorts and other accommodations reached 156.2 million.
This represents a 2.1% increase compared with 2024, when the figure stood at 152.9 million overnight stays. The result highlights the continued attractiveness of Greece as a destination known for its cultural heritage, Mediterranean climate and well-developed tourism infrastructure.
The country continues to attract millions of international visitors every year while also maintaining strong domestic tourism demand.
Greece ranks among the top five tourism markets in the EU
In 2025 Greece ranked fifth in the European Union in terms of total overnight stays. The largest tourism markets in Europe continued to dominate the rankings.
Spain remained the leading destination with 513.6 million overnight stays. Italy followed with 476.9 million, France recorded 471.7 million, and Germany reached 442.1 million.
Despite having a smaller population and economy compared with these major tourism powers, Greece has firmly secured its place among the top tourism destinations in Europe.
Across the entire European Union, total overnight stays reached nearly 3.1 billion in 2025, representing a 2.2% increase compared with 2024. This corresponds to an additional 66.4 million nights spent by travelers across the region.
International travelers drive tourism growth
The main driver behind the increase in overnight stays has been international tourism. Across the EU, overnight stays by foreign visitors increased by 3.4%, representing an additional 49.7 million nights.
Greece has benefited strongly from this global demand. The country’s ancient history, famous archaeological sites, island destinations and Mediterranean coastline continue to attract visitors from around the world.
At the same time, tourism offerings have diversified in recent years. Cultural tourism, gastronomy experiences, yachting tourism and city travel have all contributed to expanding Greece’s tourism appeal beyond traditional summer vacations.
Domestic travel remains an important pillar
Domestic tourism also played an important role in the sector’s growth. Overnight stays by Greek residents increased by 1.1% in 2025, adding approximately 16.7 million nights.
This trend indicates that Greece’s tourism sector is supported not only by international arrivals but also by strong domestic demand. Internal tourism helps maintain stable occupancy rates, especially during the off-season.
Tourism growth across the European Union
The European tourism sector as a whole continued its recovery and expansion in 2025. Most EU countries reported increases in overnight stays.
Malta recorded the strongest growth rate with a 10.1% increase in overnight stays. Poland also demonstrated strong performance, with a 7.2% increase.
However, several countries experienced declines. Luxembourg reported a 2.4% decrease in overnight stays, Romania saw a decline of 1.7%, and Ireland recorded a slight decrease of 0.4%.
Despite these cases, the overall trajectory for tourism across Europe remained positive.
Strong tourism performance in late 2025
The fourth quarter of 2025 also showed positive momentum for European tourism. Overnight stays across the EU increased by 3.0% compared with the same period in 2024.
Ireland recorded the strongest growth during this quarter, with overnight stays rising by 12%. Malta followed closely with a 10.9% increase.
Only a few countries experienced declines during the final months of the year. Romania recorded a 4.6% decrease while Luxembourg saw a slight drop of 0.4%.
Nevertheless, 25 of the 27 EU countries reported growth during this period, demonstrating the resilience of the European tourism sector.
Greece strengthens its tourism position while new destinations emerge
The increase in overnight stays confirms that Greece remains one of the most attractive destinations for global travelers. Its Mediterranean climate, historical heritage, island resorts and well-developed hospitality industry continue to drive tourism demand.
At the same time, new tourism hubs are emerging in the broader region. Georgia has experienced rapid tourism growth in recent years, with expanding hotel infrastructure, rising international visitor numbers and increasing investment in hospitality and real estate sectors. Cities such as Tbilisi and Batumi are attracting more global travelers due to competitive prices, modern infrastructure and growing international connectivity.
As experts at International Investment note, the continued growth of tourism across Europe is creating new investment opportunities. Greece remains one of the EU’s key tourism destinations, while rapidly developing markets such as Georgia are emerging as dynamic new centers of tourism and real estate investment in the region.
