ETIAS Postponed Again: What’s Changing for Travelers?

ETIAS Postponed Again: What’s Changing for Travelers?

Travelers from visa-free countries can relax – the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will not be mandatory until April 2027, with full enforcement expected in October 2027.

Originally planned for 2024-2025, the ETIAS rollout has been postponed once again, allowing tourists to enter Schengen countries without prior authorization for at least two more years.

Why Was ETIAS Delayed Again?

The primary reason for the delay is the complexity of implementing the Entry/Exit System (EES), which is meant to replace manual passport stamping at borders. This system has faced multiple delays and is now expected to launch in October 2025.

How is this connected to ETIAS?

EES tracks border crossings – a necessary step for ETIAS operations.
EES implementation will take 6 months (until April 2026).
ETIAS will launch six months after EES, meaning October 2026 at the earliest.
Initially, a transition period (October 2026 to April 2027) will allow travelers to enter without ETIAS.
ETIAS will be fully mandatory by October 2027.

How Will ETIAS Be Implemented?

The system will be introduced gradually:
October 2026 – ETIAS launches, but remains optional.
April 2027 – ETIAS becomes mandatory for most travelers.
October 2027 – ETIAS is fully mandatory for everyone.

What Does This Mean for Travelers?

If you’re planning a trip to Europe in the next two years, nothing will change. But by 2027, visitors from visa-free countries (US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, etc.) will need to apply for ETIAS authorization before travel.

Online application process
Valid for 3 years
€7 fee
Not a visa but mandatory for visa-free travelers

This latest postponement means that travelers can continue visiting the EU without additional requirements until 2027. However, those planning frequent trips should familiarize themselves with ETIAS and prepare for the new system when it launches.
