Chisinau Airport Passenger Traffic Surges by 35%

Passenger traffic at Chisinau International Airport increased by 35.4% in January 2026 compared to January 2025, according to Logos Press citing data from Moldova’s Civil Aviation Authority. The figures confirm continued growth in air travel demand through the country’s main aviation gateway.

Passenger and Flight Volumes in January 2026

In the first month of 2026, a total of 447,127 passengers traveled to and from Chisinau International Airport. During the same period, 3,361 flights were registered, representing a 27.9% increase compared to January 2025, when 2,628 flights were recorded.

The faster growth in passenger numbers relative to flight volume suggests higher aircraft load factors and expanded route utilization.

Punctuality Remains a Challenge

Despite strong traffic growth, flight punctuality indicators remain moderate. On-time arrivals accounted for 68.3% of 1,838 flights, while 69.7% of 1,826 departures were on schedule. The data indicates ongoing operational challenges amid rising traffic volumes.

Most Popular Destinations from Chisinau

In percentage terms, Paris and Bucharest recorded the strongest growth compared to January 2025. Passenger traffic to Paris increased by 83.3%, while Bucharest saw a 76.1% rise.

In absolute numbers, Istanbul remained the leading destination with 48,574 passengers, up 13.4% year-on-year. Sharm el-Sheikh followed with 40,758 passengers and a 27.8% increase.

London ranked third with 29,285 passengers, posting a 2.2% rise. Milan recorded 20,052 passengers, up 3.9%, while Paris and Bucharest stood out for their dynamic growth rates.

Outlook for Chisinau International Airport

Aviation authorities emphasize that the positive start to 2026 confirms growing interest in Chisinau International Airport as Moldova’s primary aviation hub. Increased tourism flows, business travel and route development continue to support expansion.

As experts at International Investment report, a 35% increase in passenger traffic signals structural strengthening of Moldova’s aviation sector. If growth momentum continues, Chisinau Airport may consolidate its regional position, though sustained development will depend on improved operational efficiency and higher punctuality standards.
