Tbilisi Bypass Road Project Enters a New Phase
Georgia's Roads Department under the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure has signed a contract with China Railway Tunnel Group Co Ltd, the winner of an international tender for the construction of the 7.3-kilometre Tsitsamuri–Avchala section. The agreement was signed by Deputy Chairman of the Roads Department Salome Tsurtsumia and the company's official representative, Liang Hongjun.
What Areas Will the Tbilisi Bypass Road Cover?
A four-lane highway will be constructed along the Tsitsamuri–Avchala section. One of the project's main engineering components will be two parallel tunnels, each measuring 3.4 kilometres in length. The project also includes the construction of bridges, transport interchanges and other infrastructure facilities.
What Is the Main Objective of the Project?
The primary objective is to redirect part of the transit traffic away from the capital and reduce congestion on Tbilisi's road network.
Construction Stages and Completion Timeline
Following the official signing of the contract, construction of the Tsitsamuri–Avchala section (Lot 2) entered its active phase in 2026. The 7.3-kilometre section, including two parallel tunnels measuring 3.4 kilometres each, is scheduled for completion by 2030. The total contract value is GEL 499.1 million.
"We all know what happens at the entrance to Tbilisi. This is why the construction of a bypass road has become necessary. The Tbilisi bypass will significantly reduce traffic congestion in the capital and strengthen the country's role as a transit hub," said Georgia's Deputy Minister of Finance, Giorgi Kakauridze.
According to the government's official plan, the new 49-kilometre Tbilisi bypass highway will be fully completed by 2030, allowing transit traffic to bypass the capital entirely.
