Norway Urges Citizens to Renew Over 430,000 Passports & ID Cards in 2025

Norwegian authorities have urged citizens to renew their passports and ID cards well in advance, as more than 430,000 travel documents are set to expire in 2025. The Norwegian Police are encouraging early applications to avoid processing delays, especially for those planning to travel abroad this summer.

- 395,000 passports require renewal
- 37,000 national ID cards need to be updated
- The busiest period for applications is spring
Police recommend checking your passport’s expiration date and booking an appointment early.
“Spring is always the busiest time for passport renewals, so we’re issuing a friendly reminder. Check your expiration date and book your appointment as soon as possible”, said Bjørn Vandvik, Director of the Norwegian Police Directorate.
Reminder SMS for Expiring Passports
The Norwegian Police will send SMS notifications to those whose documents are due to expire soon, advising them to book an appointment at the passport office.
Passport validity periods in Norway vary by age:
Children under 5 years — 2 years
Children aged 5-10 years — 3 years
Children aged 10-16 years — 5 years
16 years and older — 10 years
High Demand for Passport Renewals After the Pandemic
After the COVID-19 pandemic, Norway saw an unprecedented surge in demand for passports and ID cards.
In 2022, Norway issued 922,000 passports and IDs
In 2024, this number dropped to 655,000
In comparison, 755,000 documents were issued in 2019 (before the pandemic)
