Georgian Railway Begins Large-Scale Reconstruction of Tbilisi Central Station
According to the project, the first, second, and third platforms will be completely renovated. Dismantling of the existing platforms has already begun. In their place, new, higher, and more modern platforms will be built on the station premises. The rehabilitation works also provide for the removal of the underground passage between platforms, as well as the staircase leading to the platform from the Tbilisi Central building.
Under the new design, 4 new escalators will replace the pedestrian staircase at the station; passenger waiting areas will also be refurbished. During the rehabilitation, fire detectors and emergency lighting will be installed on the platforms.
"This is a rather outdated station, and accordingly, we want to create a new station. We are doing all platforms: the first, second, and third. Consequently, there will be certain delays during this period, but we believe that within 10-11 months we will be able to carry out a complete rehabilitation of the station, making it significantly more modern and comfortable for passengers," stated Lasha Abashidze, Director General of Georgian Railway, to the media.
The total cost of the comprehensive modernization of Tbilisi Central is approximately 7 million lari. Georgian Railway plans to complete the renovation works at Tbilisi Central in the autumn of 2027.
